Germ Vs Terrain Theory- Why It Matters?

Most of us will get sick once or twice in our lifetime, but have you ever noticed how some people tend to ALWAYS be sick. Every year they are catching colds and flus. And have you ever noticed how some people over come sickness super fast which others take weeks to recover. The western world has largely adopted the germ theory which was first popularised by Louis Pasteur (1822 – 1895), the father of pasteurisation.

The germ theory is just that, all about the germ, it states that the cause of sickness is de to an external germ invading the body. The theory believes that if we kill germs, we will not become sick. Pasteur’s theory is based on the belief that the human body is sterile, devoid of germs. If the body becomes invaded with germs then the illness begins and therefore if we remove the germs externally and in the body, we will be healthy again. Germ theory is how most of western medicine fights illness, drugs such as antibiotics, disinfectants and vaccinations are all designed to kill external pathogens and remove them in and around our bodies. There is a strong belief that humans will be able to eradicate ALL pathogens on the planet and we will never need to worry about evolution of organisms nor keep our body strong. Today, we can see this in pharmaceutical industries, medical sterilisation procedures/ recommendations and even feed-additives in animal farming.

The terrain theory can be associated to both Claude Bernard (1813-1878) and Antoine Bechamp (1816 – 1908). Both explored the idea that the internal terrain determines our state of health. When the body is functioning optimally, a homeostasis happens – balance and health. Immunity and detoxification can functional the way they are supposed to. They both believed that a weak terrain is naturally more vulnerable to external germs and disease occurs as a result of imbalance in the internal terrain, which can relate to pH imbalance, gut microbiome changes, stress, sleep patterns, etc. This means nutrition, detoxification, and mindset are key factors you consider important in disease prevention and elimination.

It's important to note that, Pasteur changed his original theory at his deathbed with the famous quote, “the microbe is nothing; the milieu is everything.”
